In 1951 Sir Zelman Cowen became the sixth Dean of the Law Faculty at the University of Melbourne, a post he held until 1966.

Travelled to Oxford until 1951 when he came to Melbourne Law School as Chair of Public Law. The only Professor at the school at that time, he was made Dean.
