Appointed senior lecturer at the University of Melbourne in 1955, Brett became reader in 1961, the first Hearn professor of law in 1963 and professor of jurisprudence in 1964.

Brett spent a period as a visiting professor at institutions in the US during his time on staff at Melbourne Law School.
